Your skin talks to you and will let you know if you are using the Clarisonic on the wrong speed. It’s not going to hurt you; it just feels a little bit different if you are having a breakout. The main thing is, you don’t want to use anything if you have…

Ha Long Bay in Viet Nam is too beautiful. Even though it’s been designated a World Heritage Site, that hasn't helped to protect it from itself. Mammography is a widely-used imaging technique that uses low-dose amplitude X-rays to examine the breast. Here in the United States, mammography is recommended every two years for women between fifty and seventy-four years of age. Mammography is a screening tool that can ultimately reduce mortality from breast cancer, but it is not without its problems. Women who are nursing, on hormone replacement, or who have fibrocystic, large or enhanced…

This week’s blog will give you the current style trends with a few pointers on how to keep your feet both comfortable and [...]

  • Take Yoga Off the Mat on Earth Day

    Eileen
    20 Apr 2012 | 10:23 am
Ever since I was a child I’ve always wanted to contribute and make the world a better place. From helping the poor to conserving the earth’s resources. But how? I was always stuck and paralyzed by the vastness and enormity of the needs of the world. How can my small insignificant penny help the world?? Like yoga, altruism is a practice and a process. I have learned that yoga is a process. A spiritual, mental and physical process that takes time and patience. This Earth Day I am convicted to rededicate my resources to helping the earth. And the way that I will approach this is the…
  • Try Yoga to Keep You Running Strong

    Eileen
    12 Apr 2012 | 11:06 am
I love yoga and I love running. Truth be told, I am not very disciplined when it comes to stretching after a run. I started running 10 years ago and have participated in plenty of running events ranging from 5ks to Marathons. Marathon training is especially brutal on the body. And that’s when I started experiencing lots of aches and pains such as lower back pain, burnout, fatigue. However, that all started to change when I found yoga. Yoga has helped me both mentally and physically endure the rigors of marathon training. Now I will not run without incorporating a little yoga into my…

Flying Yoga with Laura Camp I met Laura Camp during my first yoga teacher training. She is so warm and authentic you can’t help but love her. The most important thing that she has inspired in me is a love for yoga and a desire to deepen my own personal development. Laura is the Director and Founder of Flying Yoga Shala in Oakland. She teaches public classes and advance yoga trainings in her studio. Her studio was voted best of the bay in 2010 for Best Airborne Ashtanga. What was your first introduction to yoga? I was a dancer performing in a show; I tore my calf muscle while on stage. I had…

Looking for that summer glow? You won’t find it at the bottom of chemical filled products. The warmer months mean less is more but there are tools and tricks to help us stay looking gorgeous. Scrub off the winter skin and replenish with an Aubrey White Camellia Oil  This multi purpose oil contains white camellia, which has been hand-harvested in Japan. Use it for your skin, hair and even scalp. I also like to keep nourishing oils around to aid troubled cuticles. Summer exposure to the sun means you have to protect yourself and your family. THROUGH THE AGES – HOW YOUR SKIN CHANGES All skin goes through a natural aging process through the decades. Some of the changes are inevitable, others can be prevented. Your most important protection at this stage of life is wearing a sunscreen SPF15 every day as part of your basic skin care regime. As adolescence…

Hopefully you regularly go through your medicine cabinet to toss expired medications. But what about your makeup and skin care products? Believe it or not, these can go bad, too. Maintaining healthy skin certainly includes regular facials and proper skin care, and a big part of that is having products that aren’t past their prime. But how do you know if your face cream or eye shadow needs to be tossed? Here’s an easy to follow breakdown: Face Makeup/Treatments Liquid formulas are good for at least six months, powder-based can last for up to two years. Anti-aging or acne skin treatments…

Everyone deserves to have healthy skin! This week, we examine three common hereditary skin conditions – rosacea, psoriasis and acne. If you think you may suffer from one of these, talk to your doctor about different treatment options. By managing your symptoms, you can boost self-esteem and feel beautiful in your own skin.   Rosacea Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness of the face. It can also cause a burning or stinging feeling. While there is no cure, you can identify triggers that make symptoms worse, such as sun exposure, spicy food and hot beverages. Triggers…

  • JUST BACK FROM AUSTRALIA

    Charlene Florian
    2 May 2012 | 11:01 pm
I’ve just returned from Australia where we officially launched Kerstin Florian. Our products have been available Down Under for about a year, but we waited until we had some fabulous spas before officially announcing our launch to the spa industry and media. My trip started in Melbourne, a creative, exciting, ever-changing city with extraordinary surprises. Upon landing, I took a run along the Yarra river in South Wharf. It was an unusual and extraordinarily lively hot day. Street musicians entertained as people flooded the cafes and boardwalk. We work with a delightful day spa in St.
  • Sun-Kissed

    18 Apr 2012 | 1:32 pm
Last weekend Kerstin and I went on a four-hour hike in the heat of the desert sun in Ladder Canyon located about 40 miles southeast of Palm Springs, California. The geologic formations, some 600 million years old, are among the most unusual of their kind in the world. The canyons were formed by the convergence of the North American plate and the Pacific plate along the San Andreas fault. The desert flowers were blooming. It was magnificent. We wore hats and of course sunscreen (Multi-Vitamin Day Crème SPF 30), but hiking in the desert for four hours reminded me how intense the sun can be.

    4 Apr 2012 | 2:01 pm
Ponchos, alpacas, coca leaves, artistry, brightly colored textiles, ancient ruins and mystery. Peru is a magnificent country. I’ve just returned from an amazing trip to study Amazonian herbal medicine, experience ancient sites including Saqsaywaman, Machu Picchu and springs (Tombomachay), the heart of the spa industry. Trips such as this always inspire me – help me to understand the healing culture of indigenous people, how they connect to nature and how we can incorporate some of their practices into our own healing rituals. Five rivers come together in the ancient colonial city…
  • The Power of Peptides

    Charlene Florian
    21 Mar 2012 | 6:31 pm
What are peptides exactly? Peptides. Also known as “mini proteins” – are one of the hottest ingredients in skincare (and yes, found in our Caviar and Correcting lines). Our skin is made up mostly of collagen; it is the foundation that gives your skin its support and thickness. Young people have lots of collagen and taut, smooth skin. In contrast, older people have much less collagen and thin, more wrinkled skin. Collagen is protein and is made up of long chains of amino acids strung together, like chains of linked building blocks. When it is broken down, short segments of…

    28 Feb 2012 | 4:38 pm
I’ve just completed a 30-day internal cleanse. While a month may sound like a long time, I fasted (on vegetable juices) for five days and the remainder followed a clean, mostly high-raw diet and took a regimen of herbal tinctures (Blessed Herbs) before each meal. Cleansing is a way to boost healing when systems are taxed and beginning to show signs of stress. It is a challenging topic to discuss, as it is somewhat controversial and even makes people uncomfortable talking about it. I get it. If you’re not familiar with the concept of cleansing or how it works, it can seem foreign. Last…

  • Good Day, Sunshine!

    9 May 2012 | 10:24 am
Ahhhh, the warm sunshine is upon us as spring shifts into summer. We spend more time outdoors, enjoying the longer hours of daylight, and some of us work to achieve the bronze glow that we have missed all winter long.  However, if we are not careful in respecting the sun’s strength and brilliance, we could end up with more than just a tan. Exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can prematurely age the skin and cause skin cancer. To remind all sun lovers of the potential dangers, May has been declared Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The skin is the largest…

    9 May 2012 | 9:59 am
So there I was sitting at this ever so cool “insiders only” restaurant on the Lower East Side with a friend extolling the virtues of life outside of NYC. Could this be?  But first, the restaurant – located at the end of Freeman’s Alley on Rivington Street between the Bowery and Chrystie Street.  See what I mean?  You need to be a New Yorker just to get there and even then it can be tricky.  Of course, it helps if you know that it’s down the alley behind the bespoke tailor shop with the $4000 suits…and, if you’re late enough, you can kind of pinpoint the…

... Because last month I was spending my time at the hospital with my mom – and believe me, I could go on about that for quite a while.  Suffice it to say, it scared me on any number of levels, including the realization that if you go into the hospital by yourself – which is my likely scenario since I have no children to stand by my bed – who knows what the outcome will be.  You know, I much preferred it when I was an innocent who believed in the ultimate powers of people like doctors.  But then you read that they’re all playing Angry Birds or bidding on Ebay during…

Okay, I’ll admit it: Years ago, I was as reluctant as the next person to sign up for Facebook. At the time, I had (go ahead and gasp) a MySpace page. After mounting pressure, however, I finally caved and signed up. It took me nearly a year to really “get into it” but I eventually did. And once I did, I simply never looked back. Nowadays, I use Facebook for everything from connecting to old friends, to keeping relatives updated on my kids, and – of course – for enhancing my business. Yes, social media has become a crucial aspect of business in the 21st century and – no – the…
  • The Green Dilemma

    21 Apr 2012 | 12:10 am
I’ll admit it: this whole “Go Green” business is driving me nuts. Not because I don’t place value on environmental sustainability (I absolutely do), but because it often feels more like a sales and marketing ploy than an authentic movement. Everywhere I go, I see green product descriptions. Everyone is green these days. Everything is sustainable. In fact, I would be surprised not to see some reference to eco-friendliness on a company’s marketing materials. To a certain extent, I understand that. As environmental sustainability has moved to the forefront of nationwide discourse,…
  • Your Most Reliable Worker: Your Treatment Table

    admin
    14 Apr 2012 | 2:46 am
I know what you are probably thinking right now: You are your business’s most reliable worker. Right?Well, sort of. Not really. Let me explain. While there is, indeed, some truth to the fact that you are the crux of your business, I would argue that your treatment table is, in most cases, the most reliable worker you have. You see, quality spa equipment should hold up through many years of trouble-free use, far more – to my mind – than we can reasonably expect from ourselves. As much as we like to think of ourselves as being extraordinarily reliable, we can get sick, occasionally take…

I’d like to start out today’s blog by sharing an early career faux pas of mine. It wasn’t horrific, but I certainly felt like a failure at the time. Here’s what happened: I went to meet a high-profile client to train her team ona series ofmassage products and spa equipment they had purchased before theirspa was set to open the following week. Mid-presentation, the client abruptly asked me what the cost per treatment of my product was. Having no clue, I fumbled for words. Seeing that I had no clue, she called me out. “How can you not know how much your products will cost a service…

  • Five Signs your Skin is Stressed

    lynda
    15 May 2012 | 1:33 pm
Free Digital Photos Now you have five more reasons to avoid stress! Stress has a definitively negative effect on your skin. Here’s how your face shows stress: 1. Dryness When you are under stress your body produces increased levels of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol decreases the skin’s ability to hold water. The result is dry skin which lacks vibrancy and luminosity. 2. Fine Lines It is not an old wives tale that stress causes wrinkles. According to Prevention Magazine “Cortisol triggers an elevation in blood sugar, which–via a process called glycation–damages collagen and…

If there is one system of the human body most responsible for driving someone to the massage therapist it’s the muscular system. Not only is it the organ system most easily manipulated by the therapist without the muscular system no one would be able to drive their car. The muscular system is composed of skeletal muscles; the muscles that attach to bones. These are the muscles responsible for movement, and the ones that are sore when overworked or forced to stay in one position for too long. The muscular system is also part of the larger musculoskeletal system that includes tendons which…

You might be asking yourself, “Is a ‘No-Chip’ Manicure for me”? Or is you’re a skeptic, you might just be ignoring the signs popping up: “We have no-chip manicures!” Understandably. In the harrowing history of nail polish, few women have managed to fish keys out of their purses without nicking one or more of their freshly coated nails. Even if color survives that plunge, a round of dishwashing quickly begins to erode the finish. And its value….. But Harmony’s Gelish hybrid nail color manicure promises to withstand such trauma. Each layer is specially…

    30 Mar 2012 | 10:42 am
Q: I have Rosacea and my esthetician says that she can’t use steam during my facial. Is this true? A: This actually is true. Rosacea prone skin can become inflamed with heat. Not every person with Rosacea will have a flare up with steam but the majority of people do and your esthetician was correct by playing it safe with your skin. Rosacea is a condition that can progress with each and every flare up, so avoiding a flare up is key. Some other things your esthetician should be avoiding during your facials are extremely hot towels, scrubs, and aggressive facial massage. Your skin care…

Anyone interested enough in massage to read a blog about it knows that massage is beneficial to the body in a myriad of ways. Most have probably also heard the lists of diseases and conditions massage is helpful for. What can be even more interesting is the ways massage affects the individual systems of the body, how those systems interact with each other, leading to the overall benefit massage can have in a person’s life. Over the next few months the massage minute will be going into detail about how massage can affect individual systems of the body. When understanding how massage affects…

Ten Tips to help prolong the life of your manicure. 1.Keep nails short. Long nails are more prone to chipping and breaking than short, professional-length ones. Aim for nails no more than a quarter inch past your fingertips. 2.Groom cuticles. When polish is applied to overgrown cuticles, it peels off easily. Keep cuticles in check by applying a drop of oil to them and gently pushing them back with a wooden tool. (Don’t cut cuticles, which can cause them to grow back even thicker.) 3.Clean nails. Apply polish to nails that have been cleaned with a cotton swab dipped in nail-polish…

  • How Long Does It Usually Take for Children to Recover From Otoplasty Surgery?

    Renu MED SPA
    27 Apr 2012 | 5:39 am
Question : How long does it usually take for children to recover from otoplasty surgery? Answer : Children recover from surgery significantly quicker than adults. The biggest issue that I have with children who have undergone otoplasty is not pain, or post operative fatigue, but, trying to keep them less active during the healing phase of their otoplasty surgery. I put a protective and compressive dressing on each child after otoplasty. The dressing will stay on for about 6 days after the otoplasty. Children like to return to normal activity before the first post operative visit and I…

    Renu MED SPA
    27 Apr 2012 | 4:38 am
Question : How do I know if I’m a candidate for otoplasty? Answer : I believe the only way to tell if you are a candidate for otoplasty is if you do not like the appearance of your ears, or more specifically, your ears appear different from the ears of others. The most common reason for otoplasty surgery is because of prominent ears or large protruding ears. However, otoplasty is not a single procedure and different deformities of the ears are all addressed with otoplasty surgery. I would be happy to see you in consultation to discuss with you what improvements could be made to your…

Question : Is it possible for me to have my ear surgery performed with local anesthesia? Answer : I have performed otoplasty under local anesthesia. Once the ears have been injected with local anesthesia, there is no pain and otoplasty is well tolerated. My choice in adults, however, is to give twilight anesthesia or IV sedation. The procedure can take a couple of hours for both ears and given the safety of IV sedation I see no reason to not be completely comfortable during the otoplasty surgery. Also, my experience is that when procedures are longer than an hour and somewhat invasive,…
  • Do Ears That Stick Out Ever Improve As Children Age?

    Renu MED SPA
    26 Apr 2012 | 12:54 pm
Question : I’m considering otoplasty for my son but I’d like to know if ears that stick out ever improve as children age. Answer : If you are considering otoplasty for your son and he is older than 5 years of age, it is extremely unlikely that the prominant ears that you see now will become less prominant as he ages. You may not notice his prominent ears as much and will elect to wait prior to otoplasty, but, the ears will likely stay in the same anatomic configuration that you are seeing today. Renu MED SPA
    26 Apr 2012 | 11:10 am
Question : After my neck lift, how many days will it be that I’m totally out of it and in bed? Answer : My experience, most of my patients who have had necklifts actually feel quite fine the day after their surgical procedure. You may feel out of it on post operative day one simply because of the effects of anesthesia, however, the pain is only moderate and you should not feel particularly debilitated or need to stay in bed. In fact, I would encourage you to stay out of bed as much as you can the day following your necklift surgery except to nap. Posted by Dr. Philip Schoenfeld

Bryn Kenny, Public Relations Director, Dior Beauty The first time I met Bryn Kenny she was writing for WWD Beauty Biz (now WWD Beauty Inc). I remember we met for cocktails in New York City, and she interviewed me, one of my first real interviews, the one that led to what I consider as my first piece of legitimate trade press… In preparing this blog, I looked back to figure out what year that was – 2007 in my mind, maybe 2008. Well, that was 2004, which means I have known Bryn for eight years… how time flies! She has continued to follow Alchimie’s progress, and I to…

Mia Farrow A couple of years ago, during Neill Corporation’s Serious Business conference, I had the pleasure of meeting Vidal Sassoon. This week, as the entire beauty industry mourns the loss of this legend, I realize how lucky I am to have met this industry legend. While I am no hair industry expert, I did know that he was the one who had been responsible for Mia Farrow’s hair in Rosemary’s Baby, one of the scariest movies I had watched as a teenager. We chatted briefly at a cocktail reception – a conversation I am sure he would never remember, but that I have re-lived in my head a…

Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, Director and Founder, Dermatology and Laser Surgery Center, New York, NY and 37 Extreme Actives It is easy to see why one would be impressed by Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas. First, she is striking. Second, her official title is so long I couldn’t fit it all in the title of this blog: Assistant Clinical Professor, Yale University School of Medicine and Director and Founder, Dermatology and Laser Surgery Center, New York, NY and 37 Extreme Actives, NY Derm LLC. Third, the 5 letters that come after her name in her email signature: MD, PhD. I also love that she…

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to read more. As I was taught in business school that goals need to be quantifiable and measurable, I decided that I should read one book per month. And as my Mom taught me that nothing gets the job done more effectively than having to answer to people you respect, I decided to start a book club with a group of BFFs to help me be true to my goal. Tonight was our second meeting. In theory, it was meant to be our third (it’s our third book), but life happens. We decided early on that our theme was going to be DC (DC author, DC personality, DC…

LeeAnne Cress, Studio Manager, Barre3 Georgetown Earlier this spring I discovered Barre3, and I now don’t know how I ever lived without it. I needed to get back into a regular exercise routine, I needed to get more toned, and I needed to find a better morning routine. Barre 3 did all three for me. I go to the 6:30 am class every week day that I am in DC (2 to 3 per week, typically). I love the workout (it nostalgically reminds me of my 7 years of ballet and still makes me sore everyday), and I love LeeAnne, the manager and my favorite instructor. While I always have found her gorgeous,…

To be able to use fragrances in the management of psychological ailments resulting from stress, hormonal changes and chemical imbalances, you need to be thorough with the effect of essential oils on our minds. Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit: Restoring Emotional and Mental Balance with Essential Oils I took a class with Gabriel Mojay in 2002, bought his book, and ever since, I have been using it as a reference, almost every day! • How to Lower Stress with Essential Oils

    Cristina Proano-Carrion
    26 Apr 2012 | 1:25 pm
What do you need to know about stress Stress is often labelled the “bad guy” but then, what would we do without it? Stress is an essential life force that drives our mind and body to respond to any demand made on it. Any stressful situation that we face triggers a “fight or flight response” which makes us sit, stand, walk or run. If the mind and body are unable to cope with a given situation, it culminates into feelings of frustration, anger and fear, which eventually translates into stress. As the mind and body continue to work in overdrive in an attempt to save the day, these…
  • Aromatherapy- Origins and Background

    23 Apr 2012 | 10:08 am
Many of my students and clients ask me about the origins and background of aromatherapy.  Is it new? How long has it been around us? Who discovered it? I thought this summary of the history of aromatherapy  can give you a better idea on how old aromatherapy is and how long humanity has been using nature’s aromatic plants. Aromatherapy is derived from two words: Aroma – meaning fragrance or smell and Therapy – meaning treatment. Aromatic plants were  used by the most ancient civilizations, we could say that aromatherapy is at least 6000 years old. An Egyptian …
  • Uplift and Refresh Your Senses with Bergamot

    Cristina Proano-Carrion
    6 Apr 2012 | 3:10 pm
What is Bergamot? Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia) is a citrus fruit that is native to southern Italy, tropical parts of Asia and the Ivory Coast. This citrus  fruit probably gets its name from the town of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where it was commercially grown for the first time. Bergamot is rarely consumed as a fruit or fruit juice. It is primarily cultivated for its essential oil, which is obtained through cold compression of the fruit’s rind. Apart from its medicinal and therapeutic applications, the oil is widely used in perfumes, cosmetics as a flavoring agent for Earl Grey Tea.

Exfoliate Often DO Make sure to hydrate, but know that slathering on the moisturizer isn’t going to cure dull, dry skin unless you exfoliate first, DON’T rub too hard, you’ll irritate your skin. Exfoliate twice a week all summer long to keep your skin glowing. Our Hydrating Body Buffer is a great way to gently exfoliate your skin. The natural seaweed extracts will buffer and hydrate your skin without being harsh. It will remove dead skin cells, which is helpful when peeling occurs. During the summer, I am a huge beach bum. I spend almost every weekend down by the shore, which includes a lot sunbathing. Luckily, I inherited my father’s Mediterranean complexion, which allows me to spend so much time in the sun. After a long day in the sun and the ocean, my skin needs some exfoliation in the shower. It seems that the sun will dry my skin out no matter how much tanning oil is applied to my body. Our Hydrating Body Buffer is a great way to gently exfoliate your skin. The natural seaweed extracts will buffer and hydrate your skin without being harsh. It will remove dead…

Thought I’d share one of the greatest wellness/beauty secrets and only recently have I started to fully grasp its power. It’s not a fabulous cream, a limb-lengthening workout or low GI diet (however I believe in all of these). Nope…the ultimate wellness secret is the “EROS Equation.” I came across the article by Eve Hogan while reading Health & Spirituality Magazine, which I subscribe to and highly recommend. E-R-O-S stands for “Event + Response = Outcome and Solution” We as women internalize so much and take what we perceive as other people’s opinions of us, to heart. The…

  • No Mother's Day

    5 May 2012 | 2:00 am
The United States ranks 50th in maternal health - it is safer to give birth in Bosnia than in California. In virtually every other country, with the exception of African countries that are hit hard by AIDS, maternal mortality has reduced substantially. In the United States, the maternal mortality rate has increased almost 50% since 1980 - nearly 17 in 100,000 births result in the death of the mother. At least half these deaths are preventable. In additional, a third of pregnant women in the U.S. suffer complications. Research clearly indicates that maternal attention…

Skin blemishes like acne, eczema and psoriasis can be isolating and embarrassing...but what if your blemishes were splashed across magazine covers for the entire world to see? Celebrities have skin problems just like the rest of us and it takes rockstar courage for some of them to speak out about their skin issues. • Celebrating March as Women's History Month

    5 Mar 2012 | 12:50 pm
It's finally March! We're giddy about the prospect of spring around the corner, long lazy weekends on the beach and sultry evenings sipping mai tais. But the chief reason we're so excited is that March is International Women's History Month. We've come a long way since 1920, when women were finally given the right to vote in the United States. It's true that women still earn 26% less than their male counterparts in professional occupations and are dismally under-represented in scientific and technical fields. But they are getting 75% of all honors degrees and female-owned small…
